Search Engine Tips
A brief explanation about what search engines are looking for and some simple tricks for a higher ranking:
1) Getting your web page Title right:
Title is the most important aspect of web page design if you want to score well on most major
search engines.
Rule 1: Avoid using your company name. Do use main keywords or search terms people will use
to find you. For example if you own a Bed & Breakfast in Hanalei Bay Hawaii, Island of Kauai
and the Name of the business is called "Kiluhana Inn"
Title it this way:
<TITLE> Bed & Breakfast Kauai - Hanalei Bay & Beach - Hawaii</TITLE>
Note: We did we not use the name of the Inn or business in the title?
Why??? Hawaii, Beach, Bed and Breakfast, Hanalei Bay are all key words that people are likely to use when search for this type of business.
Most internet searches would be for a word that describes a business. Unless you are GM, Ford, Jell-O all recognized and well knows names
always use your main key word
THIS IS IMPORTANT!
Rule 2: Search engines today are called spiders. When they spider your home page they pick-up the links to other pages. The other pages of your site can be just as important as the home page and thus should be treated as its own individual page. Use a separate Title. For example my site is in the
business of selling baby clothes. On one of my pages is sell the brand name Osh Kosh Bgosh I would title it this way.
<TITLE>Osh Kosh Bgosh clothing from The Kids Window</TITLE>
Notice that when you do a search for Osh Kosh Bgosh on Google the first site listed is
www.thekidswindow.co.uk/osh-kosh-bgosh.htm
This is not the home page but one of the pages within the site www.thekidswindow.co.uk.
Rule 3: Some search engines and directories give some priority to alphabetically correct web pages. That is why we started with Bed and Breakfast.
Rule 4: Limit your title to 6-10 words.
2) Metatag "Description": This is a 25 word summary about what your company does. Try and use your top 3 search terms in the description. Avoid using selling techniques like "the worlds best" search spiders don't like it and it uses up the limited number of words allowed. If you offer a free quote, free software download and anything free this is good to include.
3) Content: This is located in the body of your pages. More is better. 300 words plus is good and try and use you keywords as often as you can without spamming. If you go to Goggle and do a search locate the Cached link and click on it. Google will highlight the keyword(s) you search for and how often it was used. Analyze the competition to help you determine how they used the keywords in their content.
This will help to build a page better than theirs! GOOGLE Sample below.
BARZSO PLAYSETS Home Page
Welcome to Barzso Playsets. ... VISA AND MASTERCARD ACCEPTED ON ALL ORDERS.
Ron Barzso Barzso Playsets 28W177 Marion Road Winfield, IL 60190. ...
Description: Manufacturer of plastic toy soldiers and playsets, concentrating on American 18th and 19th centuries.
Category: Shopping > Antiques and Collectibles > ... > Plastic
www.barzso.com/ - 5k - Cached - Similar pages
4) Meta tag "Key words".
In the old days key words were a big deal, but not any more. Choose 8-10 keywords that will describe what you do per page.
Like the "title tip" use different keywords on different pages. Why not list all my keywords on the home page. 1) Most search spiders are set to default
after 8 or less. A few search engines still use human review. For example www.dmoz.com. If you were sent a page with 40 keywords on it, would you
take the time to index for all the keywords?
What about commas after each keyword?? Many feel that by leaving out the commas this creates more search phrases. Powerful search engines like Google
and others can now locate with great accuracy pages based upon a search phrase. For example "Ford Dealership in Salt Lake City Utah with used cars."
HOT TIP: Each page is treated as a separate website.
Use a different Title, description, keywords and content for each page.
Hot trick: http://www.websitetrafficbuilder.com/ is our main web page
http://www.websitetrafficbuilder.com/traffic_builder_features.htm is our page about our
software features, notice how we used traffic_builder_features.htm as the extension.
By doing this I can use one of our keywords in the title. Do this and scores bonus points
with the search engines.
<TITLE>Your Title Tag - learn to optimize your title tag</TITLE>
Remember our example above www.thekidswindow.co.uk/osh-kosh-bgosh.htm notice how they used osh kosh bgosh
in this link!
This is a hot trick!!!
Below is a setup for your metatags and title. This should be located at the beginning of your html programming.
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Customer Driven Business Training and Developmenttag</TITLE>
<meta name="keywords" content=" put in 8-10 keywords no commas">
<meta name="description" content=" enter a 25 word description and try using top 2-3 keywords">
</HEAD>
Very important: We have noticed that pages that use a closing head tag seem to rank better so use it!
